On an island that is only 21 miles long (and less than a mile wide mostly), no part of Bermuda can be considered "remote". Folks unfamiliar with Bermuda might think a central location means easier access to get around, but with excellent bus and ferry service into Somerset, this location is really useful. The beach that flanks these homes is simply lovely- tranquil waters to suit every age. Within 5 minutes’ walk, there is a world renowned resort with a superb dining room, bars, boat and moped rentals etc. Other casual places are within walking distance. Shops and excellent grocery stores are nearby in the village overlooking Mangrove Bay. To access all the fabled beaches of the south shore, one has only to hop on a bus or line up some taxi vans. Boat charters, maid service- all this and more is available. Email us now with your dates!

Nearby Attractions

Cambridge Beach Resort is a 5 minute walk from the cottage and has a reputation for fine cuisine and a spa. Please note the resort welcomes adults only. Windjammer Water Sports at Cambridge Beaches lets sailboats, kayaks, and Boston Whalers, which are great for exploring the islands and inlets of Mangrove Bay. Somerset Long Bay Park, a well-kept Bermuda public park and beach with great sunset views, is just past Cambridge Beaches.

Somerset Long Bay is a 10 minute walk away. Water shoes are recommended and widely available around the island.

A five minute walk away is the heart of the quaint village of Somerset on Mangrove Bay. Somerset is host to restaurants, a post office (with free internet access and bus/ferry ticket sales), a pharmacy, two banks, a movie rental store, a liquor store, and public transportation stops. The Somerset pharmacy has a book exchange and beach toys. The Market Place, a large grocery store, is a 10 minute walk.

A short bus ride past Somerset village is historic Dockyard. The extraordinary installation features a collection of spectacular buildings erected for navy re-provisioning in the very early 1800’s. The Maritime Museum out at Dockyard on Ireland Island has fascinating displays of items from Bermuda’s colorful past, fully restored. The Commissioner's House is an iron structure with the most commanding view of the island to be seen anywhere- from end to end. Other handsome buildings now house art galleries, museums, cafes, artist’s workshops, theaters, and pubs as well as a major ferry stop that will whisk you into Hamilton and on to St. George’s. The Railway Trail is nearby as well, and offers a peek into Old Bermuda, as the trail winds away from the main road and past some fascinating old homes and farms with jaw dropping views. Fort Scaur just above Somerset Bridge can be accessed from The Railway Trail.

Bus stops are within a five minute walking distance from the property. The ferry stop at Watford Bridge is a fifteen minute walk through Somerset Village. Look at the ferry schedule and catch the one that takes you around the Great Sound, stopping at Cavello Bay, and into the Hamilton Ferry Terminal. You will enjoy a wonderful tour of the inner island. Or take the bus to Dockyard and enjoy an ocean-side direct ferry to historic St. George’s on the east end of the island.

The grand beaches at Horseshoe, Warwick Long Bay, and Elbow are 20 minutes away by bus or moped. The newly renovated Port Royal Golf Course and the Fairmont Southampton Golf Course are both in the western end of the island.

It was great!

I just wanted to extend my thanks again for working so hard on such short notice and getting our families into W47 last week. We all had such a fabulous time and can not wait to visit Bermuda again. The home worked out great for our families and we were overall very happy, the location was amazing. The owner was great - he greeted us on day 1 and even took us to the grocery store to pick up supplies which was so kind. He also gave us access to kayaks for our visit which we all loved. Again, thank you. You both made this vacation happen - with big smiles on 4 adults and 4 teenagers faces - not an easy task to please everyone :)

Magic

Fiona — I’ve been remiss in not writing before now, but perhaps now is better because my perspective is better. You have done me one of the great favors of my recent life by enabling me and my family to stay at the estate this week. You know the houses and beaches. I could not have taken your characterization of all of them, and of Mangove Bay itself, at full face value without having seen and experienced them. Having done so by now, your descriptions were, if anything, a cautious understatement. I could not imagine such a wonderful place to enable an extended family living in four cities to get together, do things together, and get to know each other better and enjoy each other. The weather hasn’t hurt, either, but this place is magic — the kind of thing that makes a grandfather very happy. The kids love it so much that they came to me together last evening and told me that I ought to ask to let us rent this place every year... . But from these kids, that request was a real tribute to this place. We had adults, adult kids, late-adolescent kids, and grandchildren. We got around on land primarily by bus — the schedule is published and intelligible, the buses adhere to it, they are clean, and real people ride them. We also took ferries, which like the buses are clean, timely, ubiquitous and used by everyone. We also used cabs. I recommend coming in from the airport, and returning to the airport, in a cab, but otherwise you don’t need them, and they’re quite expensive. The village of Somerset is a five-minute walk from the house, along a lane with almost no traffic. I wish you were here this week. I wanted to thank you in person but this will have to do. You have my heartfelt thanks.
