Our new cottage stands in luxuriant foliage in the extensive grounds of a large house with commanding views over Harrington Sound. It is close to Knapton Hill and the beautiful John Smith’s Bay.

The gardens are overflowing with the bounty of the owners’ hobby –  rare fruit trees, cascading spices such as rosemary, and flowers heavy with scent. The massive passion flowers are the loveliest I have ever seen… be sure to ask for a tour. To the south, not 5 minutes away by moped (and about 15 minutes on foot) is the fabled John Smith’s Bay Beach, Spittal Pond Nature reserve with a salt water marsh, rock-pools, and extensive native plantings, as well as the renowned Harrington Hundreds Grocery Store – purveyors of fine food and a very handsome wine, beer and spirits inventory. There is a bus service nearby as well but it does not run late into the evening.

Bedroom: The master bedroom is a good size with queen-size bed and copious storage. The bathroom is just outside the bedroom door and off the livingroom where a comfortable double sleep sofa can accommodate a third guest.

Living Room: Comfortable furniture with flat screen TV, and wireless internet (15Mbps- the opportunity to increase speed is available if the tenant pays for the upgrade). The TV can be angled to be viewed from the bedroom as well.

Bathroom: Has a wonderful deep soaker tub as well as a shower, sink, toilet, and a drying rack for  your lingerie (iron and ironing board stored in the bedroom).

Kitchen: Modern kitchen includes oven, stove top, large fridge with large freezer compartment, kettle, and toaster and is fully-equipped with cookware and utensils. There is a square table in the dining area which comfortably seats 4.

Garden: Lounge furniture is available around the pool as well as wooden table and chairs, umbrella, gas barbeque etc.

Laundry room:  Located in a closet: may be used by guests staying 7 nights or more only.

NO LONGER AVAILABLE Pool: The pool is 25 metres and 5.5 feet deep.

This beautiful little cottage house is equipped with cable TV, wireless internet access, split-unit air conditioners, ceiling fans, and telephone for local calls only. Bath linens and beach towels are provided. A hair dryer is available for your use.

No housekeeping service available as this unit is self-catering only.

Less than 1 mile from Harrington Hundreds Grocery Store – very easy walking distance

Several restaurants in Flatts village including Rustico which is very good and several more at Collectors Hill. Flatts is not more than a mile and a half, easily walkable in daylight

St. Patricks Catholic Church is just before Collectors Hill on the South Shore Road, not more than two and a half miles – and 5 minutes by the bus heading into Hamilton.

Nearby Attractions

John Smith’s Bay is a well kept local secret- a quiet beach with deep soft pink sands that slope into quiet waters without the buffeting of heavy wave action or undertows. Locals like to take huge picnic baskets to the beach in the early evening when all the tourists have disappeared back to their hotels.

Nearby is Spittal Pond: don’t let the unattractive name put you off! It’s a sturdy walk up hill and down dale surrounding a salt water marsh, terminating in breathtaking vistas of waves crashing on the rocks, rock pools filled with interesting sea life, ancient rocks carved with the initials of poor souls swept in here in the 1500’s- rife with history, birds, plants, and trees, including Bay Grapes (exceedingly tart) and Prickly Pears (very like pomegranates in taste) that grow thornily on heavy cactus. Don’t tackle that plant unless you know what you are doing! An excellent hand-guide to the island is: A Naturalist’s Field Guide to Bermuda (Martin L Thomas), which can be bought online. Migratory birds flock to the marsh, sunk between the coastal hills and the ridge along which the South Road meanders. The quiet is absolute and the collection of native species means that you have a feel for what the original settlers experienced when they arrived – the low palmetto trees, the sedges and vines, the scent of deep vegetation underfoot, and the flowers scrambling up into the sunlight. The coastline here is quite wild – rock pools and crashing waves, driftwood, and the reefs clearly apparent above the swells. Bring stout shoes, drinks and sunscreen and go exploring!

The most excellent Harrington Hundreds grocery store offers every delicacy. However, we take frozen meat and fish as well as coffee, tea, biscuits etc. with us so there is less shopping to do when we arrive. Then you only have to stop in for eggs, milk and bread, plus fruit and salad makings.

There is a bus stop heading west to Hamilton just a couple of minutes walk from the property down by Harrington Hundreds Grocery. The Specialty Inn, a family style restaurant with sushi, local dishes, sandwiches and delicious hamburgers, is about a 5 minutes ride down South Road at the crossroads of South Shore Road and Collector’s Hill. You may see movie stars here too: its down-home atmosphere belies the delicious local fare that is served here.
