E36 is a fine stately home constructed in 1815 in the Georgian tradition, arguably the most imposing of all private residences in St. George’s. It is set back from the road by a broad expanse of lawn. The double-tiered balcony gives it a view to the south across St. George’s harbor including an unobstructed view of St. Peter’s Church, the oldest English-speaking church in continuous use in the Western Hemisphere.
There have been very few alterations to the original building but an addition was made to the northern precinct. The slave quarters on the lower level have seen few changes since they were vacated in 1834. The house is located almost in the center of the Towne St. George’s, a residential town which dates back to 1612. This historic home is within the Preservation Area of the Towne which is also a World Heritage Site.
The property is surrounded by high walls and there are a number of rare and endemic plants, including Bermuda cedars, yellow wood, Norfolk pines, snowberry, hibiscus, fig trees, aloe plants, night blooming cereus, palm trees, Poinciana and many other tropical and subtropical plants. There are also vegetable and flower gardens where you can see Bermuda Easter Lilies, sugar cane, several varieties of fruit trees, roses in many different colours and other interesting plants propagated by the owner. Vegetables in the garden may include Bermuda onions, beets, corn, carrots, zucchini, cucumber, potatoes, Swiss chard, tomatoes and various spices, depending on the season.
The rental unit is located on the southwest corner of level 2 and includes a full kitchen with apartment-sized stove and refrigerator (with freezer), plus a dining area. The kitchen is equipped with a microwave, coffee-maker, kettle, toaster, cooking utensils, pots and pans, baking dishes, cutlery and crockery. You will find everything you need for meal preparation. From the kitchen there are views of the gardens and St. Peter’s Church. As a unique bonus, you can enjoy your meals on the very large balcony, right outside the south-facing kitchen window where a table and chairs have been provided. The views of the garden are spectacular and can be enjoyed at any time of the day. This is a favourite spot for our guests. A BBQ is available for you on the balcony as well!
There are two very spacious bedrooms, each with two single beds which can easily be converted into a king-sized bed. There is ample closet and drawer space. There are beautiful views from each bedroom, and a writing desk and chair have been included in each. The bedrooms can each accommodate two persons and have heat and air-conditioning. These A/C units are powerful enough to cool the whole apartment, or heat it in the cooler winter season.
This unit has a huge bathroom with shower/tub enclosure, toilet and sink unit. A hair dryer, bath towels, beach towels, wash cloths, and hand towels will be provided. In this very comfortable apartment (your home away from home) there is a living room with the original hearth and a sofa bed which can be used to accommodate additional guests, up to a maximum of five. Children are welcome, although it is important for parents to monitor them closely on this expansive property. Amazon FireTV stick, wireless internet (215Mbps download, 50Mbps upload), and a cell phone for making local calls will be provided. There are no laundry facilities on site, but there is a public laundromat nearby. The nearest bus stops are on York Street opposite Ebenezer Methodist Church.
