Nearby Attractions

Grocery stores and little restaurants are a short 5 minute drive away with fabulous dining options in Somerset Village, Dockyard and at the many fine restaurants down the south shore including Pompano, The Reefs, Henry VIII, The Fairmont Southampton (5 restaurants there including the fabled Newport Room), the Waterlot Inn, Willowbank, and many others.

Interesting places to see in the vicinity would include Dockyard. The extraordinary installation features a collection of spectacular buildings erected for navy re-provisioning in the very early 1800’s. The Maritime Museum out at Dockyard on Ireland Island has fascinating displays of items from Bermuda’s extraordinarily colorful past, fully restored. The Commissioners House is an iron structure with the most commanding view of the island to be seen anywhere- from end to end. Other handsome buildings now house art galleries, museums, cafes, artist’s workshops, theatres, and pubs as well as a major ferry stop that will whisk you into Hamilton and on to St. George’s. Heading east by road towards Hamilton, you will be charmed with the town of Somerset- it has a post office and pharmacy, nice places to dine, and little shops where you can re-provision while admiring the views and the mangrove-edged beach. Ely’s Harbour at Somerset Bridge has a small marina where you can rent boats and explore the multitude of small islands just offshore including Cathedral Rocks. A bus-ferry pass to get around would be a good thing to have if mopeds or Twizy rentals are not your style!

The Railway Trail is nearby as well, and offers a peek into Old Bermuda, as the trail winds away from the main road and past some fascinating old homes and farms with jaw dropping views. The grand beaches at Horseshoe, Warwick Long Bay, and Elbow are a short bus or moped ride away and some are serviced public beaches with cafes, beach chair, and umbrella rentals available. The Watford Bridge terminal is half a mile walk away. The local Supermarket is close by as well and spirits are sold until 9pm, and groceries can be purchased there until midnight. Casual dining can be enjoyed at “Traditions Café” or the “Country Squire Restaurant” and the “Frog and Onion Pub” and the “Freeport Restaurant” is 10 minutes away at Dockyard.

The Fairmont Southampton Golf Course and Port Royal are both in the western end of the island. The Somerset Bridge Post Office has free internet for people who do not have a laptop.

House rentals require a lease and a security damage deposit. The balance payment is made 8 weeks in advance of the tenancy commencement. We read the electricity meter at the beginning and at the end of your visit: included in the price is $200.00 a week’s worth of power and if you go over that, the overage is deducted from the damage deposit. Electricity costs 330% more in Bermuda than in the USA, and you are requested and expected to conserve by turning off air-conditioning when you go out, hanging clothes on the line to dry whenever possible, etc. Included is an allotment of $200.00 a week’s worth of water as well. We just ask you to respect island conservation measures at all times.

There is a boat rental a minute walk down the street at the dock in Mangrove Bay. Lasers, kayaks, Boston Whalers, and all the snorkel gear you’ll need for rent is available there. We recommend Oleander Cycles as they have a kiosk next door at the Cambridge Beach Hotel and will also deliver.

Key points of interest are the Crystal Caves, The Royal Naval Dockyard, and Maritime Museum.

Discount rate available for families and groups for Segway tours, must be 16 yrs and over. This can be arranged with the owner when booking.

50th Anniversary

We rented W31 to celebrate our 50th Anniversary and get our family together from UK, USA, Australia and Italy. We had 16 people staying at the house and it was very comfortable with plenty of space for such a large crowd. It was the best place we could have wished for and everyone without exception had a wonderful time. They all loved the access to the beach and ocean, especially the children and also loved how large the house was. I would rent it again in a heartbeat. In fact our family seems to think we should make this an annual event!!! Thank you Bermuda Rentals and the homeowner for giving us such a memorable holiday,

We loved it!

We had a wonderful time at this house! We had plenty of space, the house had such old charm to it we loved it! If we all visit as a large group again we will definitely chose W31! The owner was so nice, we had a couple small issues throughout the week and he was right there to help us, such a sweet gentleman. The large front porch was where we had breakfast each morning and each night we had drinks and music playing, we laughed and danced, it truly was a perfect place to stay! The private beach was amazing!! Thank you for all of your help booking this vacation, my family has so many awesome memories!

Perfect for our stay

I wanted to thank both Bermuda Rentals and the owners of W31 for providing a delightful vacation venue for our family. Not only was everyone we encountered very responsive to our requests, but genuinely welcomed us to Bermuda. The historic home was just perfect for our multi-generational family of 14. The many add-ons over the years provided individual nooks for quiet spaces as well as several options for sleeping arrangements. In addition there was ample room for group activities of simply lounging or participating in one of many card games or taking turns with several 1,000 piece puzzles. The large porch with seating for all was the perfect gathering space at the end of the day for cocktails and the sharing of treasures that each member had explored throughout the day. With the house being convenient walking distance to a large super market, a lovely beach, and public transportation we enjoyed the option of remaining all to ourselves or venturing far and wide throughout the island. Thank you one and all for a perfectly delightful vacation, one of our best!

Lovely historic Bermuda home!

We completely enjoyed this lovely home. We were 2 families that rented the house for a week. The kitchen is well stocked with dishes and cooking utensils. The rooms are comfortable and clean and several have attached bathrooms. There are 2 bedrooms with a TV and the kitchen has a small TV. There is a stero so you can sit on the ample porch to relax in the evening and listen to music. Wifi is also provided. It is a short walk to the beautiful Cambridge beach and Mangrove bay. The bus stop and the ferry are walking distance as is the post office where you can buy the tickets. The grocery store is also walking distance. There is a water sports rental just down the street. This is a quiet, tranquil location perfect for people who want to enjoy the beauty of Bermuda on their own and who don't mind walking.

Absolutely fabulous

W31 – is a fabulous house! Gave me a good sense of living in the tropics – all OPEN and, when there was a breeze, the house is situated beautifully to catch it. The fact that the doors were all open all day – and we kept the air-conditioning off in the bedrooms except when we were in them allowed us to imagine how it would have been living there long ago too. It was perfect for our big group dinners to eat outside on the big porch – but we only cooked for the big group one night (BBQd steak, frozen potato slices, salad, canned baked beans (SIMPLE!) and the other two with everyone there were catered by Livio and Raj – who I highly recommend! NICE that [the owner] has two refrigerators! And the TVs he had just installed were wonderful for the Olympics. Loved the walk to the beach – and the beach. All in all – everything was a big success I think. And again – our big helpers were Karen, [the home owner], Melvin, Raj/Livio and, W31’s marvelous housekeeper Liz. Thanks and Kudos to them – and to you for all your good advice in advance! At home I bought 25 Omaha filet steaks wrapped in bacon for $200 (their best bargain) . We wrapped them in 4 smaller packs – each with a small freezer pac (4×6) and wrapped in bubble wrap – and back into the freezer. Then the afternoon we were leaving – put them in a duffle wrapped in old beach towels which we left there. We checked all the luggage and then we took a red-eye from SF to Newark; waited there 5 hours – then flew to Bermuda and drove to the house. Steaks were still completely frozen – just as if they been in a freezer the whole time! )

Nice time

We have just returned from our stay at the Cambridge House in Bermuda. The experience was very satisfactory. The chef that you recommended was also very satisfactory. Melvin Overbridge provided the taxi service in a timely fashion.
